Author Interview - Carly Huss | The Weekly Geek
Whatup, nerds. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing author Carly Huss on what she's geeking out about!
Carly Huss is the author of A Kiss from Cupid and Nine Lives. She’s the leader and founder of North Texas Writers. She writes young adult and adult novels, usually with a touch of fantasy, always with a handful of kissing.
Carly is an amazing author and one of my closest friends. I got to beta read her newest project, and it easily became one of my favorite books. Can't wait for it to publish.
Carly, what are you geeking out about?
What I’m reading: Kasie West. I’m devoted to reading all her books. They’re light, flirty, and relatable. I find myself slipping into her characters’ shoes, imagining how I’d handle their situations. Good food for thought material there. Plus, she’s a YA contemporary queen. So much to learn from her.
What I’m listening to: Just like every other Swifty out there, I’m decoding Folklore. She really is a genius. The album starts with a beat-you-up break up song that sends you straight to the fetal position. And since Taylor’s known for writing from her life, you go into the rest of the album trying to uncover the story of how she and Joe Alwyn broke up. (Which is especially devastating because Lover was an album devoted to her love for him.) And just when you’re convinced he cheated on her, she announces that three of the songs are the story of a fictional love triangle, and it’s up to us to determine which three they are. AND just when you think you’ve figured that out, she divides the album into chapters, and you start to wonder if those songs are meant to tell a story of their own. Thank goodness one of those chapters has a bonus song with a whole bunch of Easter eggs pointing to her and Joe still madly in love after all. That’s all to say, every time you listen, it’s a new experience. Brilliant.
Movies I’m watching: Musicals. I finally watched The Greatest Showman. Thank you, Disney+. And it sent me on a hunt for all my favorite musicals. Grease, Bye Bye Birdie, My Fair Lady, you can’t hide from me; I’ll find a way to watch you. Please, please, please comment letting me know what other musicals I should be watching!
TV show I’m rewatching: The Vampire Diaries. Don’t roll your eyes. Sometimes a girl just needs some good old fashioned good guy vs. bad boy love triangle action. Besides, this time I’m determined to unearth the psychology behind why I love Damon so much. It can’t just be his eyes.
TV show I’m watching for the first time: Sweet Magnolias. I had the itch, once again, to rewatch Gilmore Girls, but I stopped myself, recognizing that I have a problem. But I wanted something small-towny, something pink, something inspiring. And the backdrop of a southern town filled with female characters on a mission to make something of themselves sounded perfect. I’m on the early stages, but so far so good!
What else are you up to?
Despite 2020 being...2020, I’ve managed to carve out a happy little bubble. Two of my passion projects have been published!
Nine Lives is about a girl who wakes up in a new body, and it’s not the one she wants. She has to leave behind the life she’d just started being happy with or risk losing another one of her nine lives. A girl only has so many.
A Kiss from Cupid is about a Cupid who’s tired of waiting around for the Kiss that will send her to her one true love. She wants him now, and she knows exactly where to find out who he is.
