This Post is a Variant, Approach with Caution | The Weekly Geek 50

Hey there, you nerd. Here's a short list of stuff I'm enjoying or geeking out about this week:
What I'm watching: Summer Games Done Quick 2021. Games Done Quick is a non-profit organization that hosts a week-long video game speed running marathon twice a year benefitting the Prevent Cancer Foundation and Doctors Without Borders for the winter and summer events, respectively. Speed running sees players complete games as quickly as possible, often using glitches to break them in incredible showcases of skill. It's fun to watch runners explain the process behind their shortcuts as they annihilate classic and modern games. For instance, one runner beat one of my favorite games, Paper Mario (normally about a 40-60 hour game), in about 26 minutes.
Fight I'm pumped about: Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier 3. UFC 264 this Saturday sees the fighters' 3rd matchup after McGregor beat Poirier in 2014 and Poirier knocked out McGregor last January. Lots of hype around this bout with the rest of the card promising a good time.
Show I'm enjoying: Loki. The new Marvel show picks up from Endgame's time travel segment where the God of Mischief manages to steal the Space Stone and creates a new timeline. Loki is quickly apprehended by the Time Variance Authority for disrupting the Sacred Timeline and forced to hunt down other Variants, products of broken timeline variations like himself. Aside from a couple dubious time-travel mechanics, the show is smartly written and engaging. We get to see Loki reckon with his past and face the worst parts of himself, which sets up a great character arc. Marvel is doing a great job of subverting expectations in new and surprising ways. I've lost my ability to predict much of what happens in their shows. Even the exposition proves natural. You don't need an in-depth knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to enjoy this one as the script does a fine job of getting you up to speed. Highly recommend.
That does it for this week! If you enjoy discovering awesome new things, be sure to subscribe and share. Bye, you nerd.
