What If...? We Explored the Expanse | The Weekly Geek 54
Hey there, you nerd. Here's a short list of stuff I'm geeking out about and exploring:
What I'm watching: The Expanse. I watched the first episode of this sci-fi show last year before learning it was based on a book series. I enjoyed it so much I put it on hold to read the book. Now I'm back into Season 1. The story follows a detective on the asteroid belt searching for a missing person and a ship captain who gets caught up in an unfolding conflict between Earth, Mars, and the Belt. Contrary to many sci-fi books, the novel doesn't read like a textbook of scientific concepts or contain excessive passages of fictional lore, but drops the reader in the action while doing a fairly good job of introducing organic exposition. The show does the same, offering a smart take on the source material that doesn't talk down to its audience.
Hiking pack I'm digging: This one. I bought this as a last-minute purchase for a hiking trip two weeks ago since I no longer had my old hiking backpack. This thing is amazing. I thought it would be a standard pack to carry some water and trail food, but this pack comes fully equipped with multiple pockets and zippers, a dry pack for storing items you don't want to get wet or stowing wet clothes so they don't stink up the rest of your pack, and two deep bottle holders for water. The pack even folds up into its own small self-contained pouch for easy storage. Super easy to throw into my carry-on for the flight.
What else I'm watching: What if...? With the introduction of the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this series explores what happens to well-known characters and storylines in parallel dimensions where often a single choice unfolds an alternate chain of events. The first episode felt somewhat underwhelming to me, but the second episode onward captured my full attention. I love how Marvel will take their own concept and completely turn it on its head in fresh and exciting ways.
That's it for this week! Let me know what you're geeking out about in the comments. And if you love discovering awesome new stuff, be sure to subscribe and share this blog!
