Not just A Batman, THE Batman | The Weekly Geek 68

Whatup, you nerd. Here’s your bi-weekly list of stuff I’m exploring or geeking out about.

  • Podcast I’m listening to: Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History. My buddy turned me on to this one. Dan Carlin is an amateur historian who goes on a deep dive through various historical eras in long-form audio narratives. I love how he ties together culture and context to form a more complete picture of historical events than you ever got in your boring high school textbook. Even if you’re not a history buff, his casual break-down of complex topics combined with his ability to paint a vibrant picture of the times makes history fascinating and engaging.

  • Movie I’m watching: The Batman. No Spoilers. Light on character development, but has the best Batman action scenes I’ve ever seen. Cinematography is *chef’s kiss*

  • Another podcast I’m enjoying: Philosophize This! I’ve been interested in philosophy lately, trying to better understand the nature of reality, God, and how I think about it all. I stumbled across this podcast by Stephen West. He recommends listening to the podcasts in order of release to understand the roots of philosophy, although he openly admits that some people may not resonate with the format of his earliest episodes, in which case he advises to start at Episode 90. I’m starting on Episode 1, and while the narrative seems scripted and a little stilted in parts, I’m quite enjoying it.

  • Book I’m reading: Radical by Maajid Nawaz. Maajid is an activist and founder of Quilliam, a counter-extremism think tank. In Radical, he documents his journey into and out of radical Islam. I think there are a lot of misconceptions in the US about Islam and the Islamist movement, some of which are propagated by governments and political interest groups. Before picking up his book, I’d listen to his interview with Joe Rogan here. He exposes a lot of corruption in governments across the globe and how it’s affecting the current social climate.

  • Change I'm hoping for: Permanent Daylight Savings may get us off this time change rollercoaster.

That’s it for this week! If you enjoy discovering awesome and thought-provoking things, please subscribe and share the blog. Later, nerd.
